Happy New Year! January 7, 2010

Posted by A. Robinson in Life.

Wow, a new decade, huh?  I guess it’s time to get back into the swing of things…like blog posting.  Because, you know, what could be more important than that?  Really.

Anyway, I thought I’d start off by sharing this news story from the New York Times about H & M destroying clothing.  I have to say, I find this disgusting.  I sort of understand their theory–they don’t want crazy college students waiting until they dump their clothing to pick up $100 shirts for free.  But why dump the clothes in the first place?

This is particularly upsetting given the weather around here recently.  By tomorrow, the lows are supposed to be close to -10; Northwest Arkansas is scrambling to set up warming centers for the homeless and elderly.  Many times clothing can make the difference between freezing to death and living through the night.  H&M cutting up winter coats?  Good lord, there are plenty of organizations that would take the coats and then make sure that they were given to the poor.  It’s obvious that they couldn’t move the product anyway–their company is already eating that loss.  Geez, how hard would it be to give the clothes to a non-profit?  It would be so easy.

For shame, H & M.

Having homeless people wearing your new line might be bad advertisement?
